A Mosque Near Ground Zero in NYC?

Recently my wife and I took a tour of NYC and visited the site of the World Trade Center disaster. Yesterday the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave their approval for an old building in NYC to be razed which clears the way for a new Mosque to be built near Ground Zero. How do some people feel about this possibility?

“We had Islamic fundamentalists who killed 3,000 people at the World Trade Center site and are trying to kill more since then, so to have a Mosque at that site will stir up feelings – and antagonistic ones,” says Douglas Muzzio, a professor of political science at Baruch College in New York.

Mayor Bloomberg and ten religious leaders held a news conference to show their support for the plan and to advocate religious tolerance.

I personally think that the average New Yorker is opposed to the plan and the controversy is just beginning.

Watch out for the political opportunist who will seize upon this situation to fuel their careers appealing to folks who are not too tolerant of anything now.
